The simple term wireless refers to a multitude of different technologies, devices and applications.
Wikipedia defines wireless as ’any type of electrical or electronic operation which is accomplished without the use of a ”hard wired” connection’.
So called next generation wireless devices have been creating a significant amount of buzz lately, with Apple’s iPhone being the latest example. (For an eye-popping demo of the iPhone by Apple’s Steve Jobs, visit www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf07/ and click Watch the Keynote Address.)
More established devices, such as traditional cellular phones, smart phones and personal digital assistants (PDA’s) are becoming almost ubiquitous, with devices like the Blackberry (unaffectionately known by some as the Crackberry) and the Palm causing increased debate as they appear to take over the lives and attention spans of their users.
So, what does this all mean to businesses who want to take advantage of wireless technologies?
The most basic function of any wireless technology is the communication of information.
In today’s business world, information is said to be the second most powerful resource an organization has, its people being the first.
Wireless technologies allow companies to communicate and share real-time information that was traditional available only via a hard-wired connection to the office. This information can be shared with salespeople, service representatives, suppliers, customers and others.
Now, salespeople on the road who could only access their email or company information systems once they were connected to the office, can access this information from virtually anywhere at anytime.
Imagine a sales rep who can create a quote or order on their PDA while sitting in front of the customer and have a printable copy immediately emailed to them.
Or, how about a buyer who can look up real-time inventory levels while placing an order while at a supplier?
’In-the-field’ company service technicians armed with immediate access to customer and equipment information can provide a superior level of service and easily communicate accurate updated information back to head office for future reference.
Fleet tracking solutions that utilize GPS (Global Positioning System) technology are used for real-time vehicle tracking and operator communications. Such solutions can be used by organizations in many different types of industries.
The potential applications of wireless technologies are almost endless. An organization looking to deploy wireless technologies must ask itself what information is most valuable and to whom. The answers to these questions will help them determine the wireless technologies that will provide the highest return on their investment.
Datapro Technology Solutions is an IT consulting firm that helps small and medium-sized businesses get the most from their investments in technology.
